Waterfront Islands
The vast marshes and meandering rivers of the large islands between Downtown Savannah and Tybee Island attract boating enthusiasts, sun seekers, and fishing fanatics. Savannah’s Lowcountry lovers gather in the quiet and family-focused islands south of town. Residents prefer the slow pace and peaceful life of living amongst the marshes, rivers, and Spanish Moss. Historic Gullah-Geechee communities are neighbors to young families and multi-generation compounds. Boating, walking, sailing, biking, fishing, shrimping, and sunset cruises are all favorites of local residents who “Work to Live”, not “Live to Work”.
WHITEMARSH ISLAND offers the serenity of lowcountry island living with schools, shopping centers and a popular YMCA with forested walking trails. The private Savannah Yacht Club is a boater’s paradise that offers exceptional marine services along with dining, tennis, and a resort pool. Homes can include brick ranches, waterfront condos, and quiet family neighborhoods that are brimming with golf carts.
WILMINGTON is the larger island and is dotted with tree-lined neighborhoods and large, private waterfront properties. Deep water wooden docks offer spectacular sunset views after a day out on the boat. The Wilmington Island Club has an 18-hole golf course and the Wilmington Plantation offers condominiums with westerly views for stunning sunsets .
ISLE OF HOPE
The Isle of Hope is a picturesque community away from the bustle of Downtown Savannah. The tabby ruin at Wormsloe Plantation is the oldest structure in Savannah. Bluff Drive has homes that date back to 1820 and is one of the most iconic roads in Savannah. It is a winding one-lane road with the Intracoastal Waterway to the east and historic mansions and massive moss draped live oaks on the west.
DUTCH ISLAND
Dutch Island is a small island community bordered by the Herb River and Grimball’s Creek, along with the Intercoastal Wilmington & Skidaway Rivers. It is a private, gated community with around 450 single family homes and covers an area of approximately 500 acres. There are over 8 miles of paved roads where kids, bikers and golf carts dominate. Dutch Island has 10 lagoons and ponds for fishing, a community deep water dock, swimming pool, playground, dog park and tennis courts. Many of the homes on the island have their own private pools and docks, which allows residents to enjoy outdoor, coastal living.
VERNONBURG
Located on the Vernon River, Vernonburg Historic District consists of a residential community and archaeological remains from the 18th century German settlement, 19th century resettlement, and early 20th century development. The landscaping within the district includes large front lawns with mature oaks, Spanish moss, camellias, azaleas and other native flora and fauna. Vernonburg’s streets are also shaded by an impressive oak canopy.
COFFEE BLUFF was once the site of two antebellum plantations. Today it is home to a few hundred families, as well as a small group of Carmelite nuns who live in a historic, waterfront monastery. Coffee Bluff is bordered by the Forest and Little Ogeechee Rivers and has a panoramic view across the marsh to Richmond Hill.
BURNSIDE ISLAND is located in the Moon River District near Skidaway Island. Burnside is a boater’s paradise with its easy access to the interoastal waterways and nearby Coastal Georgia sounds.
